Accident Commentaries
VI. Accident when working with a bench saw
The job consisted in cutting a wooden board on the bench saw.
The cutting-disk guard was not working properly and had been disabled (it had been secured in the up position).
At a certain moment, the worker’s glove was caught by the cutting disc, resulting in one of his fingers being cut.
Why did the accident occur?
- Due to annulling a protective device on the equipment.
- Due to lack of training in the use of the equipment.
How could the accident have been avoided?
- If the disc guard was faulty, the equipment should have been replaced by another in a good state of repair.
- The person handling the equipment must be qualified to do so and know the safety conditions of handling it perfectly well.
