Order and Cleanliness

2. Most important hazards

  • Falls onto the same level.
  • Knocking against or being hit by objects.
  • Falling or collapsing objects.
  • Contact with noxious substances.
  • Pricks and cuts.
  • Fires.

The prevention and protection measures to adopt when faced with risks resulting from the lack of order and cleanliness at work are shown next.

Hazard:

2.1. Falls onto the same level

  • Risk Factors:
    • Dirty floors, impregnated with slippery substances or substances in poor conditions.
    • Objects, materials or waste placed in a disorderly manner.
  • Prevention and/or Protection measures to adopt:
    • Orderly management and collection of surplus materials and equipment.
    • Provide work, transit and storage areas with proper lighting.
    • Keep floors clean and in good condition and, if possible, use anti-slip floors.
    • Place electrical wiring overhead or underground (signpost).

2.2. Knocking against or being hit by objects

  • Risk Factors:
    • Out-of-place equipment or machinery.
  • Prevention and/or Protection measures to adopt:
    • Provide work, transit and storage areas with proper lighting.
    • Have a good system of controlling equipment.
    • Keep aisles and service areas clean and hindrance-free.

Hazard:

2.3. Falling or collapsing objects

  • Risk Factors:
    • Incorrect storage method.
  • Prevention and/or Protection measures to adopt:
    • Know the load limits of shelving.
    • Avoid excessive heights when piling up materials.
    • Place material so that it is accessible.

Hazard:

2.4. Contact with noxious substances

  • Risk Factors:
    • The existence of noxious substances in stores and in the workplace.
  • Prevention and/or Protection measures to adopt:
    • Place noxious substances in out-of-the-way, well-lit places.
    • Use suitable, hermetically-sealed containers with the corresponding identification labels.
    • Safety Files on noxious products must always be available wherever such products are present.

2.5. Pricks and cuts

  • Risk Factors:
    • Use of sharp and/or pointed tools.
    • Disorderly management of waste materials, shavings, etc.
  • Prevention and/or Protection measures to adopt:
    • Orderly management of tools and the use of portable tool boxes.
    • Sharp or pointed tools that are not being used must remain in their sheaths or cases.
    • Remove waste immediately after it is produced using suitable bins.
    • Use appropriate personal protection equipment.

Hazard:

2.6. Fires

  • Risk Factors:
    • Using work clothes impregnated with flammable substances.
    • Placing cloths or cottons impregnated with oil on hot equipment or machinery.
    • Inappropriate gathering of inflammable waste and accumulating rubbish in the surroundings.
  • Prevention and/or Protection measures to adopt:
    • Forbid smoking.
    • Promptly mop up inflammable liquids that may have spilled onto the floor.
    • Remove waste promptly, impeding its accumulation.
    • Signpost fire-fighting facilities and material.
