4. Signalling and labelling of hazardous chemical substances and compounds

Hazardous chemical substances and compounds generate risks that need to be controlled, such as fires, explosions and others that are pollutant in origin. The consequences of these hazards actually occurring affect people, things and the environment.

In order to be marketable, the container that hazardous substances come in needs be labelled. This labelling must be legibly and indelibly written in at least one of Spain’s official languages and must fulfil the following requirements:

  • Name of the substance.
  • Name, full address and telephone number of the entity responsible for  marketing established in the internal market (in the European Union, either the manufacturer, importer or distributor).
  • Hazard symbols and indications. The symbols should be printed in black over an amber background.
  • The R Phrases (specific risks of the substance) are to figure on the label.
  • The S Phrases (cautions regarding the substance) are to figure on the label.
  • The CE number or label.
  • The label should be fixed to one or more sides of the container.
