4. Signalling and labelling of hazardous chemical substances and compounds

4.1. Safety information sheets

Not only is it necessary to know the hazard rating of a hazardous chemical substance or compound via its label, but more information on its proper use is needed.

This information is found in the so-called “Safety information sheets”, which must contain the following information:

  • Composition of / Information on the components.
  • Identification of hazards.
  • First-aid instructions.
  • Fire-fighting measures.
  • Measures to be taken in the case of an accidental spill.
  • Handling and storage.
  • Controls regarding exposure / Personal protection.
  • Physical and chemical properties.
  • Stability and reactiveness.
  • Toxicological information.
  • Ecological information.
  • Considerations regarding removal.
  • Information regarding transport.
  • Other information.

The following is an example of a Safety Information Sheet:

Specific risks:
  • Easily inflammable
  • Toxic if inhaled or swallowed
Cautions:
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • Keep the container tightly closed
  • Protect against sources of ignition
  • No smoking
  • Avoid Contact with the skin
