Signs
2. Forms of Signs
2.5. Gestural signalling
2.5.1. Features:
- A gestural signal should be precise, simple, ample, easy to carry out and understand and clearly distinguishable from any other gesture.
- When using both arms at the same time, this is to be done symmetrically and for one single gestural signal.
2.5.2 Particular rules of use:
- The person emitting the signals, denominated the “person in charge of signalling”, is to give the instructions for manoeuvres by means of gestures to the recipient of said instructions, called the “operator”.
- The person in charge of signalling should be able to visually follow the development of manoeuvres without being threatened by them. Otherwise, one or more supplementary persons in charge of signalling are to be employed.
- The role of the person in charge of signalling is to oversee the manoeuvres and the safety of workers situated in the vicinity.
- The operator is to suspend the manoeuvre he is performing to request new instructions when he cannot carry out the order received with the necessary guarantees of safety.
- Accessories to gestural signalling:
- The person in charge of signalling should be easily recognizable for the operator.
- The person in charge of signalling is to wear one or more suitable elements of identification, such as a vest, sleeves, armband or helmet, and use “paddles” when necessary.
- Identifying elements are to be in bright colours, if possible, the same for all elements, and are to be used exclusively by the person in charge of signalling.
2.5.3. Codified gestures:
Prior consideration:
The set of codified gestures that are shown further on does not bar the use of other codes, particularly in certain activity sectors, applicable at a Community level to indicate identical manoeuvres.
