Risk Assessment: Electromechanical Erection

Workers Affected by Works Hazards

RISK

211/212/213 Fire.

200 Explosion.

RISK FACTORS

  • Our clients’ own installations with special characteristics (e.g. petrochemical plants, chemical plants, metallurgical plants).
  • Work in premises presenting a fire or explosion hazard.
  • Handling combustible materials (solvents, paint)
  • Short-circuits, overcurrents or conductors in poor conditions.
  • Handling of welding equipment, oxyacetylene equipment, aluminothermal welding, etc.
  • Handling of mechanized tools (radial cutters/grinders, drills, etc.).

PREVENTIVE MEASURES

Rules for acting

  • Do not smoke, light a flame, generate sparks or use any kind of heat source in prohibited places or in the vicinity of combustible or inflammable materials.
  • Maintaining equipment in a good state of repair.
  • Keep gas bottles vertical and secured.
  • Keep combustible or inflammable materials away from and protected against possible sparks, etc.
  • Comply with Clients’ Regulations.
  • Smoking is only allowed outdoors or in designated areas.
  • Inside underground galleries and conduits, use explosion-proof lighting and, when the voltage is higher than the safety voltage, use circuit-separating transformers.
  • In places with an explosion hazard, employ an appropriate measuring device (explosion meter) so as not to enter or to evacuate in the case of danger. Use ATEX equipment
  • Signposting/screening the area.
  • Work in premises presenting a fire or explosion hazard:
    • In places with an explosion hazard, employ an appropriate measuring device (explosion meter) so as not to enter or to evacuate in the case of danger. Use ATEX equipment.
    • Work on electrical installations and in premises presenting a fire or explosion hazard are to be carried out following a procedure that reduces these risks to a minimum. To do so, the presence of inflammable substances are to be limited and controlled in the work area and the appearance of sources of ignition are to be avoided, in particular, in the case of an explosive atmosphere existing or possibly forming. In such cases, the carrying out of live work or operations (changing bulbs, fuses, etc.) is not allowed, unless such work is carried out on installations and with equipment designed to operate under these conditions and which fulfil the specific applicable regulations.
    • Before carrying out the work, the availability, suitability as regards the type of foreseeable fire, and the sound working condition of extinction equipment and means is to be checked. If a fire is produced, the parts of the installation that may be affected are to be disconnected, unless it is necessary to leave them live to fight the fire, or their disconnection entails potentially more serious hazards than those resulting from the fire itself.
    • All work on electrical installations existing in premises with a fire hazard must be carried out by Authorised Workers. Should an explosion hazard exist, before starting work it is necessary to draw up a procedure that guarantees the safety of the workers involved. Said procedure must be in writing. Moreover, the work must be done by Qualified Workers following the aforementioned procedure.
    • Comply with Clients’ Regulations.
