Electrical Hazards

6. Risks when Working on High Voltage Installations

6.1. Personal Protection Equipment

Depending on the jobs to carry out:

  • Low Voltage, when a complete enclosure exists:
    • Basic PPE (safety helmet, footwear and goggles).
    • Basic PPE (safety helmet, footwear and goggles)
  • Low Voltage, when no enclosure exists:
    • Basic PPE (safety helmet, footwear and goggles).
    • Kit for Low Voltage jobs (including fireproof clothing).
  • High Voltage, local manoeuvres:
    • Basic PPE (safety helmet, footwear and goggles).
    • Facial screen with protection against electric arcs (infrared and ultraviolet radiation, burns and projections).
    • Fireproof gloves and, over these, insulating gloves suitable for the voltage.
    • Fireproof clothing.
  • High Voltage, local manoeuvres:
    • Basic PPE (safety helmet, footwear and goggles).

6.2. Equipment for high voltage jobs and manoeuvres

a) Insulating Stools or Benches.

  • Depending on the possible use they are to be put to, these may be:
    • Indoor.
    • Outdoor.
  • It shall be designed for an appropriate insulating voltage for the job to be carried out and is to have inclined legs that stop it from overturning.
  • In the outdoor models, the legs are to be provided with insulating hoods that impede the formation of a continuous film of water in the case of rain.
  • It shall be used to test the absence of voltage with the insulating rod as well as to position the earth clamps.
  • When used, it is to be situated far from those surrounding parts that are earthed (walls, metallic shelters, etc.), and the operator is to avoid Contact with these parts.
  • In some cases, the insulating stool may be replaced by an insulating mat.
CLASS PERFORATION VOLTAGE (KV) RATED VOLTAGE OF THE INSTALLATION (KV)
I 50 U ≤ 20
II 70 U ≤ 30
III 95 U ≤ 45
IV 140 U ≤ 66
