2. Definition of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
“Any equipment to be worn or carried by the worker to protect him from one or more risks that may pose a threat to his health or safety in the workplace, as well as any complement or accessory with such a purpose”. (Spanish Royal Decree 773/1997 Art. 2).
The following equipment is excluded from this definition:
- Ordinary work clothes and uniforms whose purpose is not specifically that of protecting the health and physical integrity of the worker.
- First-aid and rescue service equipment.
- The personal protective equipment of soldiers, the police or members of services devoted to maintaining law and order.
- The personal protective equipment of means of road transport.
- Sports material.
- Self-defence or deterrent material.
- Portable devices for detecting and signalling hazards and nuisance factors.
