Safety Manual. Revised Edition 2010

Revised Edition 2010

Risk Assessment: Works. Electricity Lines

RISK

100 Projected particles.

RISK FACTORS

  • When using tools (radial cutters/grinders, drills, saws, drill presses, chainsaws, etc.).
  • Proximity to civil works or other sources of projected particles.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES

Rules for acting

  • Training in the handling of tools and information on their inherent hazards.
  • Prohibition regarding the annulling of the protective elements of the tools themselves.
  • Weld seams are not to be chipped without eye protection (electric welding).

Personal protection

  • Facial visor when using a chainsaw.
  • Helmet, safety goggles.
  • Visor over safety goggles and welder’s apron when carrying out cutting work or machining on fixed workstations.
  • Visor over safety goggles when using a radial cutter/grinder.
  • In places with a great deal of ambient dust, use diver-type safety goggles.
  • Welding: visor, welder’s gloves, leggings, sleeves and apron or jacket. If it should be absolutely necessary to weld above shoulder height, use a welder’s hood.
  • Use safety goggles in the vicinity of civil works or other sources of projected particles.

Procedures to apply

  • ITP06.
  • ITL19.
  • Welding: PC0526.

RISK

110 Becoming trapped by or between objects.

RISK FACTORS

  • Due to the machinery itself (radial cutters/grinders, saws, drill presses, etc.).
  • With cable spools or other materials used on the job (equipment, etc.).
  • Parts transported by mechanical elevation means (cranes).
  • Becoming trapped due to collapsing ground or materials when working in trenches, pits or galleries.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES

Rules for acting

  • Maintain safety distances in the vicinity of piles of material and where machinery is working.
  • Use the guards on the machine itself. Removing these is strictly forbidden.
  • Moving parts of machinery are to be protected by casings.
  • Standing under elevated loads or guiding them with your hands is forbidden (use guide ropes).
  • Do not make brusque movements with elevation machinery.
  • Do not wear items that hang loose (bracelets, chains, etc.) during the working day or gloves when working with rotating machinery.
  • One single person is to direct the manoeuvre.
  • If possible, signpost the manoeuvring zone; otherwise, impede access to this zone.
  • Use appropriate machinery for the load to be handled.
  • Maintenance of auxiliary equipment (slings, straps, etc.).
  • When laying cables in an underground conduit on extreme slopes, detailed calculations of the weight of the cable are to be made and spools with a braking mechanism are to be used.
  • Trench and pit works:
    • Preventive measures indicated for work of this kind to control the risk of falling objects that have come loose or landslides (30).
    • In the case of detecting landslides or of doubt regarding the stability of the ground or if the meteorological conditions so advise it (heavy rain, etc.), suspend work and check the stability of said ground.

Personal protection

  • Helmet and safety footwear.
  • Appropriate clothing for the job (tight-fitting to avoid getting trapped).

Procedures to apply

  • ITS52, ITS55.
  • ITP21, ITP22.
  • Mechanical handling of loads: PC0526.
  • Pit and trench works.
