Risk Assessment: Construction and Civil Works
Workers Affected by Works Hazards
RISK
120 Becoming trapped due to machines overturning.
RISK FACTORS
- Moving vehicles and machinery present on site (backhoes, cement mixer trucks, dumpers, platforms, etc.), either hired or belonging to IGESCON or other companies.
- Overturning of machinery due to exceeding gradients greater than those allowed by the manufacturer, passing over footings and trenches, machinery falling due to failure of the ground due to overloads, muddy ground, lack of skill on the part of the driver, when loading and unloading machinery onto the haulage truck.
PREVENTIVE MEASURES
Rules for acting
- Machinery (backhoe, dumper, etc.) equipped with a anti-roll cab.
- Mandatory use of safety belts on those vehicles that have them.
- Maintain the pertinent safety distances, respect signposting and demarcations if these should exist.
- Do not work within the radius of action of working machinery (trucks unloading, backhoes, etc.).
- Coordination of works among firms.
- Signpost our operations. Employ a person to give signals when required.
- Place safety limiting elements to impede vehicles from falling (dumpers, etc.) at the edge of excavations.
- Only suitably trained personnel expressly authorised to do so are to handle elevating platforms for personnel, dumpers, forklifts or any other type of equipment for moving loads or personnel, including vehicles in general.
- For more details on Health and Safety Regulations regarding the handling of machinery and vehicles, consult Appendix III of the present Assessment.
- In the case of a vehicle (dumper, forklift) equipped with Roll-Over Protective Structures (ROPS) turning over, the driver IS NOT TO JUMP from the cab.
Personal protection
- Helmet, gloves providing mechanical protection, goggles and safety footwear (with metal toecaps).
Procedures to apply
- ITS52, ITS53.
- Mechanical load handling vehicles: PC0526
