Risk Assessment: Construction and Civil Works

Workers Affected by Works Hazards

RISK

110 Becoming trapped by or between objects.

RISK FACTORS

  • Due to the tool itself (radial cutters/grinders, disc saws, etc.).
  • Becoming trapped due to the lack of the guard protecting the pulleys of circular saws and cement mixers.
  • Parts transported by mechanical elevation means.
  • Becoming trapped during the loading and unloading of wood, rebars, blocks of material, prefabricated slabs, etc.
  • Becoming trapped during the erection and dismantling of the chute for concrete laying.
  • Becoming trapped during maintenance work on machinery and vehicles.
  • Becoming trapped as a result of scaffolding falling or overturning.
  • Becoming trapped due to collapsing ground or materials when working in excavations, trenches, pits or galleries.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES

Rules for acting

  • Safe stockpiling of materials (wood rebars).
  • Maintain safety distances in the vicinity of piles of material and where machinery is working.
  • Use the guards on the machine itself. Removing them is strictly forbidden.
  • Moving parts of machinery are to be protected by casings
  • Standing under elevated loads or guiding them with your hands is forbidden (use guide ropes).
  • Do not make brusque movements with elevation machinery.
  • Check auxiliary equipment previously (slings, straps, ropes, chains, etc.).
  • Do not wear items that hang loose (bracelets, chains, etc.) during the working day or gloves when working with rotating machinery that may trap you.
  • One single person is to direct the manoeuvre.
  • If possible, signpost the manoeuvring zone; otherwise, impede access to this zone.
  • Use appropriate machinery for the load to be handled.
  • Maintenance of auxiliary elevation equipment (slings, straps, etc.).

Excavation, trench, pit or gallery works:

  • Preventive measures indicated for work of this kind to control the risk of falling objects that have come loose or landslides (30).
  • In the case of detecting landslides or of doubt regarding the stability of the ground or if the meteorological conditions so advise it (heavy rain, etc.), suspend work and check the stability of said ground.

Personal protection

  • Suitable work clothes (tight fitting to avoid getting trapped).
  • Helmet, goggles and safety footwear.

Procedures to apply

  • ITS50, ITS51, ITS52, ITS54, ITS55.
  • Mechanical handling of loads: PC0526.
  • Excavation, trench, pit or gallery works.
