Personal Protection Equipment

10. Classification of PPE

10.6. Hand and arm protection

Packaging and marking of insulating gloves for working with electricity:

Each pair of gloves should be packaged in individual packaging that is resistant enough to suitably protect them against deterioration.

The outside of the glove should bear:

  • The manufacturer’s or supplier’s name.
  • Class.
  • Category.
  • Size.
  • Length.
  • Cuff design.

The packaging should include the recommendations for use as well as any supplementary instruction or modification.

Recommendations for the use of insulating gloves for working with electricity:

Conservation:
Gloves are to be stored in their packaging. Care is to be taken so that the gloves are not squashed, creased, or placed in the proximity of heat sources.

Inspection before use:
Before each use, gloves must be inflated to check whether air escapes from them and a visual check is to be carried out. Inspecting the inside of gloves belonging to Classes 2, 3 and 4 is recommended.

Precautions for use:

  • Do not expose them unnecessarily to heat or light or Contact with oil, grease, turpentine, alcohol or a strong acid.
  • If other protection gloves are used at the same time as rubber gloves for electrical uses, they are to be worn over the latter.

This classification does not include all the different types of gloves that exist, but rather those that are most widely used in building and electrical installation work.

Periodic inspections:

The frequency of inspections is the following:

  • Insulating gloves belonging to Classes 0 (1000 V) and 00 (500 V) are to be checked annually.
  • Gloves belonging to Classes 1, 2, 3 and 4, i.e. all those for use with voltages above 1000 V, are to be replaced 6 months after their date of manufacture by new gloves and so do not need to be checked.

These checks are always to be carried out by qualified personnel.

Checks are to be carried out in the ISASTUR Group store by the person in charge, who will be responsible for leaving a record of said check, both in the tools database as well as in the review sheets.

f. Gloves made of fireproof material for working with thermal and electric arc hazards: these belong to category III and protect against thermal hazards (high temperatures).
